Game of Thrones: A Feast of Wine and Meats

It has returned.

And we were prepared.

Sunday March 31st brought the return of Game of Thrones with season 3.  Since no one I know actually has cable we have to wait a day to be able to view it. So we planned a feast for an April 1st viewing with food chosen from the Game of Thrones cookbook.

Menu:

Beef and Bacon Pie
Medieval Honey Biscuits
Medieval Mulled Wine

I spearheaded the dessert/wine section while my friend Sonia took on the meats.

The pastry recipe they use for both the pie crust and the biscuits is strange. I’ve mostly got my pastry making down pat, but this recipe threw me off.

I’m thinking my difficulties came from not making it the old fashioned way – I have a food processor, which is way faster than my thumbs.  Maybe it would have created a different texture had I done it by hand the way the recipe indicated… There was not enough butter and I think I ended up having too much water, which makes the dough really stretchy and almost rubbery. However, after frying and tasting, I have no complaints. Maybe they should be flakier but they certainly weren’t bad.

Medieval Honey Biscuits:

2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
5 tbsp butter
cold water
oil or butter for frying
1/4 cup honey
cinnamon

Combine flour with salt.  Rub butter into flour until it resembles coarse bread crumbs.

(I used a food processor – processed butter with flour until I had pea sized lumps of butter remaining)

Stir in cold water until dough just sticks together.  Be careful not to add too much water or overwork dough.

(I used ice water and processed in a couple tablespoons at a time until the dough stuck together.)

Roll out dough to 1/4″ thick and cut into circles 2″ across.

Coat pan with oil or butter and fry rounds at medium heat until light brown and crispy – about 3 minutes.

(I used more than a ‘coating’ of oil, more like 1/8″.  Flip about halfway through.  Pay attention to them, they burn easily on medium. I reduced the heat by one setting.)

Drain thoroughly on paper towels.

Bring honey to a boil and brush on to rounds.  Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve warm.

They turned our pretty wonderful.  I could skip the boiling of the honey, as it is too thin for me, but otherwise they were very tasty. Warm pastry, coated in cinnamon and gooey honey. Wow. Simple but great.

However, this was only dessert to a Beef and Bacon pie – which was also amazing. The bacon weave on top is to die for. I love the homemade, up and over the edges crust.  It goes perfectly with the gravy from inside the pie.

And all this accompanied by some Medieval Mulled Wine

Served in mason jars. I love these.

I like the mulled wine, although this is the only incarnation of mulled wine I have ever tried, so I really have no idea what I’m talking about. It seemed like everyone liked it though, so I think it’s safe to say it’s pretty tasty too.

oh… and the episode was great 😀

p.s.

I’m really loving the television show cookbook fad.  I’m about to try some of the Downton Abbey  recipes and I’m really looking forward to it.
